Sustainability at Banana Moon Caversham

What is sustainability?

Sustainability in the early years means using resources responsibly, caring for the environment, supporting our community and helping children understand how their actions can protect the world for future generations. It is embedded through everyday experiences, play and positive role modelling.

What does sustainability look like at Banana Moon Caversham?

Children learn about sustainability by:

●     Recycling and reusing materials.
●     Growing plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables.
●     Caring for gardens, wildlife and outdoor spaces.
●     Saving water and energy.
●     Using natural and recycled materials in play.
●     Reducing waste and encouraging healthy eating.
●     Learning to care for each other and their environment.
What do we do?

In our setting we:

●     Encourage children to recycle and reuse everyday materials.
●     Provide opportunities to plant, grow and care for living things.
●     Use natural and open-ended resources to support learning.
●     Teach children how to reduce waste and save water and energy.
●     Promote respect, kindness and responsibility towards others and the environment.
●     Work in partnership with families to encourage sustainable practices at home.
●     Look after and work closely with our community.
How does this link to our ELDP?

Sustainability supports many areas of learning and development within the Early Learning and Development Programme:


Personal, Social and Emotional Development-

●     Children learn to care for others, take responsibility for their environment, work together and develop respect for living things.

Understanding the World-

●     Children explore the natural world, observe seasonal changes, care for plants and animals and begin to understand how people can look after the environment.

Communication and Language-

●     Children develop new vocabulary as they discuss nature, recycling, weather, habitats and ways to care for the environment.

Physical Development-

●     Gardening, digging, planting, watering and outdoor exploration develop both fine and gross motor skills.

Mathematics-

●     Children count seeds, measure plant growth, compare sizes, sort recyclable materials and recognise patterns in nature.

Literacy-

●     Children enjoy stories, information books, signs, and labels about nature, wildlife and caring for the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design-

●     Children use recycled and natural materials creatively, explore textures and colours found in nature and express their ideas through art and imaginative play.

Embedding sustainability throughout daily routines and play supports the ELDP vision of helping children become confident, capable learners who develop respect for themselves, others and the world around them.
