Safety and Emergency

Safety and Emergency Preparedness at Banana Moon Day Nursery Caversham

At Banana Moon Day Nursery Caversham, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our top priority. We have implemented enhanced emergency procedures and robust safety measures to ensure a secure environment for all children.

LifeVac Implementation

A LifeVac device, kindly provided by The Oliver Steeper Foundation, is available to every child as an additional safeguard should standard choking first aid methods prove ineffective.
Oliver Steeper tragically passed away in 2021 following a choking incident at nursery. In Oliver’s memory, Lewis and his wife Zoe established The Oliver Steeper Foundation, which provides LifeVac anti-choking devices to Ofsted-registered early years settings.

All staff have completed accredited LifeVac training, integrated with our paediatric first aid programme. These measures supplement our established protocols, including comprehensive allergy management, individual care plans, and ongoing staff training.

Defibrillator Installation

Through the Little Hearts, Bright Futures campaign, we have installed an on-site defibrillator to provide immediate access to life-saving equipment in the event of a cardiac emergency.

All staff are trained in emergency first aid, and the defibrillator forms part of our broader commitment to health, safety, and emergency readiness.

Allergy Management

We maintain rigorous allergy management practices, working closely with families to develop individual care plans for children with food allergies. Our yellow plates system enables staff to quickly identify children with allergies or dietary requirements, reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
A daily kitchen allergy form, checked and signed by both kitchen and senior staff, ensures up-to-date awareness of all dietary needs. For infants, weaning charts are used to introduce new foods safely, in partnership with parents. Staff receive regular training in allergy awareness and first aid, ensuring prompt and effective responses to allergic reactions.
At Banana Moon Day Nursery Caversham, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and care for every child.
