Safeguarding

Banana Moon Caversham: Putting Safeguarding at the Heart of Everything We Do

At Banana Moon Caversham, safeguarding isn’t just a policy — it’s part of our daily life! We are committed to maintaining the highest standards through robust recruitment procedures, comprehensive staff inductions, and a strong focus on ongoing staff training. Continuous professional development ensures our team is equipped to provide a safe and supportive environment for children and families.

CCTV for Safety and Improvement

Our nursery is one of the few in the area to offer a comprehensive CCTV system, with 27 cameras installed across the setting. These provide extra oversight to maintain a secure environment for children.

We take privacy seriously: no cameras are placed in nappy-changing or toileting areas, and footage is stored securely, accessible only to authorised members of management.

But CCTV isn’t just for safety. Our leadership team uses footage for reflective practice and continuous improvement, helping us:

  • Review room layouts, transitions, and staffing flow
  • Reflect on day-to-day routines and spot areas for improvement
  • Support staff development using real-life examples
  • Provide evidence for health and safety audits and operational planning

This ensures that the care, learning, and environment we provide are continuously refined and of the highest standard.

Staff Training and Safeguarding Culture
Our team takes part in ongoing safeguarding training with the local authority and through monthly meetings, where staff are encouraged to reflect, ask questions, and challenge each other to stay alert. We also complete DBS update checks every three months to confirm all staff remain suitable to work with children.

“Families place an enormous amount of trust in us every day, and we take that responsibility very seriously,” says our Nursery Manager. “Safeguarding is about more than rules — it’s about building a culture of care, vigilance, and continuous learning. We want parents to feel confident that their children are safe, happy, and supported every moment they’re with us.”

Policies and Guidance
At Banana Moon Caversham, we follow our own comprehensive safeguarding policies, which cover all aspects of child protection, including staff training, supervision, recruitment, and safe practices. These policies are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they meet the highest standards.
We also work in line with Ofsted’s safeguarding guidance and the Working Together to Safeguard Children framework, ensuring our practice reflects national standards for protecting children. This means every child in our care is supported in a safe, nurturing, and well-monitored environment.

Supporting Parents

Safeguarding extends beyond the nursery walls. We provide families with trusted resources to help keep children safe at home and online:
